สวิตซ์ มีอยู่ด้วยกัน 2 ชนิด คือ Layer-2 Switch และ Layer-3 Switch ดังรายละเอียดต่อไปนี้

Layer-2 Switch หรือ L2 Switch ก็คือ Bridge แต่เป็น Bridge ที่มี Interface ในการเชื่อมต่อกับ Segment มากขึ้น ทำให้สามารถแบ่งเครือข่าย LAN ออกเป็น Segment ย่อย ๆ เพื่อประโยชน์ในการบริหารจัดการเครือข่ายได้ดียิ่งขึ้น และประสิทธิภาพในการทำงานของ L2 Switch ก็สูงกว่า Bridge ทำให้ในปัจจุบันนิยมใช้งาน L2 Switch แทน Bridge

Layer-3 Switch หรือ L3 Switch ก็คือ Router ที่ได้รับการปรับปรุงให้มีประสิทธิภาพสูงขึ้น แต่มีราคาถูกลง โดย L3 Switch นี้จะสามารถจัดการกับเครือข่ายที่มี Segment มาก ๆ ได้ดีกว่า Router
